10 Things You Really Didn’t Know About Domain Names

January 14, 2010

Domain names are equivalent to real estate within the virtual world. With the dot com era many people turned to the internet as a way of investment, social interaction, business marketing, and even virtual business. While we are all getting to grips with the ‘how tos’ and the ‘what ifs’ on the World Wide Web here are a few interesting facts about domain names that you probably did not know.

domain-names

domain-names

1. The world’s longest domain name
Legally domain names are allowed to be no longer than 63 characters in length (excluding sub-domains or domain suffixes). While there have been many contenders and claimants for the pole position of longest domain name in the world, I tend to go with the Guinness Book of Records:

http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.com/

(Phew that’s a mouthful!)

The interesting fact relating to this domain name is it is actually a real word, named after a Welsh village! I wonder how many residents have complained to their local postal company regarding lost post?!
Unfortunately this website is now under construction, but other candidates could also postulate for that first place, like :http://www.iamtheproudownerofthelongestlongestlongestdomainnameinthisworld.com/

2. The world’s shortest domain name
Acknowledged internationally as being one of the main drivers behind internet evolution, Google have now legally acquired the shortest internet domain name.http://www.g.cn/ . Google purchased the unique domain name to assist their Chinese users in locating Google with greater ease.

3. The highest price paid for a domain name?
People throughout the world have cashed in on the dot com era, many earning an applaudable amount with very little input. In January 2006 it was announced that sex.com was sold for $14 million, making it the most expensive domain name purchased to date. Close contenders to sex.com are fund.com at over $9 million, porn.com for $9.5 million and business.com for over $340 million.

4. The first domain name to ever be registered?
On the 15th march 1985 the first registered domain name came into existence symbolics.com which is still in existence today.

5. What is the shortest dot com name that I may register?
According to registering laws all domain names must be a minimum of 3 characters in length excluding sub-domains or suffixes.

6. Domain names male and female
If you are looking to register a male name registered I am afraid you are out of luck as they all appear to be registered to date. The ladies may have a little more luck, however, the more common girl names also come with a heavy price tag.

7. Is it possible to buy a 3 letter domain name?
In short no, all the 3 letter domain names have been long snatched up. That is over 50.000 domain names that are only available through a resale option, get the cheque books out.

8. What domain names have the highest registration rates?
Dot com domain names are noted as having the highest registration figures followed by dot cn (china).

9. If I own a trademark does that entitle me to the rights of the domain name?
That is correct, you don’t need a trademark to get a domain name, however people have to be really careful with trademarks. For instance Ian Tunes who registered “iTunes” before Apple’s “itunes.co.uk” existed. He could keep the domain name for life, as he was the first to register it, but because Apple was making offer after offer and giving him a lot of hassle to get this name, one day he was fed up and redirected his domain itunes.co.uk to Napster (biggest iTunes competitor at that time). From that point, he breached Apple’s iTunes copyright and lost the domain name (Instead of making a million by accepting the original deal).

10. Who is the most popular domain registrar?
Depending on the source there are a number of popular domain registrars.

old and new slavery

January 14, 2010

Slavery:
Slavery might be described as the formal (but not always legal) denial to individuals or groups of a particular freedom, to have control over their lives. The League of Nations, in its 1926 Slavery Convention, defined slavery as ‘the status or condition of a person over whom any or all of the powers attaching to the right of ownership are exercised.

slavery

slavery

Orlando Patterson

Slavery has taken many forms and existed in many historical and geographical societies. One of the most wide-ranging comparative studies of slavery as a social institution was carried out by Orlando Patterson. He suggests that there are only three noticeable universal features common to all known slavery systems:
1. that the master has the right to threaten or punish the slave with violence
2. that all slaves are denied with rights of birth
3. all slaves are deprived of honor

Bales and Robbins

In a more recent contribution, Bales and Robbins consider slavery to be comprised of three key features:
1. that the slave is controlled by another person
2. that the owner appropriates the labour power of the slave
3. that the slave’s activities are controlled by the threat or use of violence
White slavery, forced labor, debt bondage, forced prostitution satisfy all the criteria Bales and Robbins employ.

Stanley Elkins:

In his important study of slavery in America, Elkins discusses the four major legal categories which defined the status of the American slave
1. the first he argued was terms of servitudes, who were passed on to the descendants
2. Second regarding marriage and family: slaves were denied the traditional securities and assurances of family life, and no marriage between slaves was recognized in law.
3. Third regarding the matter of police and disciplinary powers over the slave: it was considered to b a good practice for masters to adopt harsh attitude towards their slaves.
4. Fourth regarding property and other civil rights: it was accepted that slaves had no such rights and whatever they might have owned became the property of their master.
Old and new slaveries:

It would be a mistake to believe that the various international covenants and conventions such as Slavery Convention 1926, Universal declaration 1948, Rome Final act 1998 etc has resulted slavery to abolish completely. Like so many other human rights violations, slavery is as common today as it has been in the past. Even the people living in west shouldn’t believe that they have abolished slavery because it still is being practiced. Kevin Bales suggests that there are around 3000 household slaves in the city of Paris alone and many more in Western countries and as an estimate he says that there are around 27 million slaves in the world today.
We have discussed the concept of old slavery taking perspectives of different scholars so let us now discuss the concept of new slavery.
This new slavery says Bales, is quite different from the old slavery as now slavery is officially illegal everywhere so there is no such thing as a legal entitlement to ownership. But this in a way benefits the modern slaveholders, who are not bound by legal procedures and they can get away with whatever they want.
In new slavery the emphasis is on a quick and profitable turnover i.e. low cost, minimal investment and high profit. The old and new form of slavery can easily be explained in a better way by the following table.

old and new slavery

old and new slavery

Old Slavery New Slavery
. Legal ownership asserted . Legal ownership avoided
. High purchase cost . Very low purchase cost
. Low profits . Very high profits
. Long term relationships . Short term relationships
. Ethnic differences important . Ethnic differences not important

Bales list various forms of modern slavery. There are 2 key factors which unite them firstly they defined by the threat of violence and secondly they are used for the purpose of economic exploitation. These forms of slavery include:

1. Chattel Slavery: As in old slavery, a person is born or sold into servitude and the ownership of another. Bales claims that this takes place in Northern and Western Africa and the Middle East, but represents a relatively small percentage of the total slave population.
2. Debt Bondage: A person is not owned but controlled and made to work as repayment of some kind of debt. The length and nature of the bondage is not defined and the debt can be passed down to children.
3. Contract Slavery: A person is kept into a place of work through promise of a contract but the reality is that he or she is kept as a slave, threatened with violence and paid nothing. Bales indicate that this is the fastest growing form of modern slavery.
4. War Slavery: In times of war, civilians are sometimes enslaved and used as laborers. This kind of slavery can be finding in Burma and Sudan.
5. Children as domestic servants: Children are not owned but are controlled through violence to perform domestic chores in return for lodgings.
6. Religious Slavery: In some African and Asian countries, girls or young women are presented as slaves to local priests usually due to some sins committed by their families.

The Khost base is under CIA and is apparently used for US drone attacks on Taliban in tribal areas of Pakistan. Obama in condolence message praised the work of those CIA agents who killed and injured during the attack. He said that those CIA agents who killed were the part of a long line of patriots who have made great sacrifices for their fellow citizens, and for our way of life. Saudi Arabia and Egypt don’t oppose Israeli aggression in Gaza due to Hamas ideological difference and rivalry so give a green card to Israel for human rights violation. After war again Arab seems divided on Gaza war summit in Qatar, Egyptian and Saudi presence is negligible and they don’t have any interest in rehabilitation of Gaza. Israel used white phosphorus but denied the use of biological weapons. UN expert accused Hamas and Israel of human rights violation. Israel rejected Goldstone report and accused that 30 incidents of Gold stone report is fake. US congress rejected the Gold stone report so it was not possible to take action in international court of justice against Israel without the consent of US.US again give free hand to Israel for future actions and under US umbrella and US Jewish lobby Israel still taking inhuman activities and Gaza siege is carry on.

Gaza under Siege

December 29, 2009

One year has passed in 22 day Israeli aggression in Gaza war but the Gaza siege is still carry on. Gaza is world largest open air prison and very little transportation of goods was transported though Egypt. Israel and Egypt both block the transportation of goods to Gaza. No one allow to in and out from Gaza.Gazans relay on Egypt but Egypt has also put heavy restriction on Rafah crossing point and going to built underground barriers to stop Gaza tunnels that was source of communication and transportation with the world. Gaza blockade has stop all type of communication with the world, food and water shortage are the serious issues of the Gazans.Gazans faces humanitarian cirissis,More then 80% of the Gazans lived on the UN and other agencies aid. Clean water is not existing.Featus of many women is disturb due to heavy use of biological and chemical weapons, 50% baby are born with born affects. There is no proper medication and health treatment. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has express unease over the worsening humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip as a result of the stringent Israeli siege. He told that the situation in Gaza is still a cause for concern, adding that he was “seriously working with the Israeli leadership” but no progress was made so far. The UN top official said that he would continue to pressure the Israeli government to finance the rebuilding of UNRWA facilities destroyed in the latest Israel war on Gaza.

Israel is still responsible for Gaza an occupied power. Aid agencies have opinion that world has failed to stop Gaza blockade and betrayed the common citizen.Isreale must ends its collective punishment to Gazans. Most Israeli said that Gaza war was a necessary defensive action but in reality it was offensive action. Gaza war has badly hurt Israeli image in the world and in Goldstone report there is clearly mention that Israel failed to protect the common citizen. If world want to bring a fundamental change in its ideas then they must give them more option. There is wrong perception that by pressure they can change the ideas of Hamas. Force and war is not solution of any issue. Gaza siege creates more problems for the common citizen and peaceful solution of the Palestinian issue.

Osama ancestors belong from Yemen and in such a volatile society it is very easy for Al Qaeda to build a potential base.CIA engaged many Yemeni for Afghan Jihad, so it has already strong background of Jihads sentiment. Saudi Arabian policy of weak Yemeni central Government creates allot problem for Yemen. In all such circumstances Al Qaeda moves to Yemen as to use launching paid. Sothern insurgents are socialist and have communist ideology but Al Qaeda succeeded to make a bond with northern Shitt insurgent. The idea of the handbook is to give deeper understand to the students for japans’ territorial claims. South Korea reacts strictly that the Japanese relation could suffer due to this teacher’s outlet that claimed Liancourt Rocks to Japan. South Korean foreign ministry spokesmen said that the new manual “could cause negative effect on developing future-oriented relations between South Korea and Japan by infusing wrong territorial perceptions into Japan’s future generations. He said that islands belong to South Korea no matters what claim Japan makes. The rocky clusters of islands have long been a source of discord between South Korea and Japan. Japan proposed to solve the issue through international court of justice while south rejected the proposal and claimed its jurisdiction on Liancourt Rocks. North Korea supports the South Korea point of view. Two Korean citizen a fishermen and his wife are permanent citizen and Korean police and post guards stationed there. The islands have great potential of fishing and larger resources or gas resources.
Although there is very good political and economic relation enjoyed by both states but due to Liancourt Rocks there is diplomatic conflict that could harm there future relations.
