April 21, 2010

South asia

Contract Faculty Association (CFA) have made in National University of Modern Languages by the contractual faculty members of the university. The major figures of (CFA) are the retired military and civilian government officers.

The office-bearers of the association are mostly the military men. The association includes ten bureaucrats and eight army officers. They all are above the age of sixty and HEC do not recognize any superannuated persons association.

Objective of making such type of association by the contractual faculty members is to preserve and sustain their interests as a result of growing pressure on Higher Education Commission (HEC) and on the president of Pakistan to implement the NUML charter in letter. Awareness came after the brutal incidence of thrashing of a university professor by Brigadier ® Ranjha.

According to a source, retired military men and teachers above sixty years of age can be employed for one or two years or they can be military men. Acronym professor has added by NUML official websites before their names whereas, the proper criteria of being a professor was not fulfilled.

As a result of brutal act by Brigadier ® Ranjha, muscular protest came out by the students of the university and this led to the strong reaction by the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA), and later led to the forced resignation of Brigadier ® Ranjha. But (FAPUASA) has demanded strapping action against him and his dismissal.

Moreover, (FAPUASA) has further demanded exclusion of Brigadier ® Aziz Khan the rector of the university. President of (FAPUASA) Dr. Mahr Saeed Akhtar has demanded that the position of a rector should be maintained after a proper procedure of selection and advertisement through vice chancellors search committee working under HEC.

Further Mr. Yasir Arafat, general secretary of NUML Academic Staff Association, has said that according to FAPUASA byelaws CFA is illegal and appointment of some of its members was challenged in the Audit Report.

Incident of National University of Modern Languages of Feb.5th is one of the enormous and imperative incident in NUML`s history which lead the registrar to submit his resign as a result of powerful and potent student’s protest in favor of their professor Mr. Tahir Malik. Registrar was actually a retired army brigadier; university mainly includes and prejudiced by amount of retired army men. And these army men refused to follow the proper procedure of inquiry for the incident happened with the university professor.

Instead of being treated as one of the victim of the incident, Mr. Tahir Malik and his colleagues who had supported him are now facing number of different threats of coercion, persecution and aggravation.

Although, Mr. Tahir Malik was the victim of the incident yet he was handed over by a show-cause-notice. This is just due to put pressure on the professor and to take revenge from him and for this proper lobby has been made by the opponents which includes the military retired people. Almost all the universities of Pakistan are now occupied by army retired men. They occupied main and important positions in academics and administration department. Moreover, position of vice chancellor is also been occupied by different army men in most of the universities. predicament is this that most of the universities are having corrupt culture and includes distrust, biasness, poorness, discrimination, doubt and favoritism etc. So, problem is increasing, no body is interested in highlighting the issue. The reason of not to rose the voice is actually the mistreatment with all the daring people who used to rose their voice like professor Tahir Malik. Ruling class is there to achieve its self interests. Our universities have become cantonment by these military dictators and they forget the original notion of an educational institute, NUML is one of the immense examples. Situation is so fragile and weak everywhere, many examples are there. Karachi university, Balochistan university, Punjab university are all facing intricate problems related to corruption, ethnicity and with various other clashes of different political groups. Dilemma is this nobody is raising his/her voice against these problems when everybody is having a audacious and intrepid example of NUML`s faculty members and of students. Government should take these problems into account and should brought democracy in these educational institutions to enhance the well-being of everyone.

Change in Numl

March 25, 2010

Every institution includes union of workers. These unions are formed to protect rights of working class and to provide a platform to discus and solve there diverse issues. Labor unions and student unions are the nursery of the politics, these generates intellectuals and politicians that are regarded as an important actors to serve for the nation.
If we talk about union regarding teachers, then I would like to say that teachers are having a key role in running an institution. Teachers union allover the world holds immense importance.
Any institution for producing best outcomes always needed the unity of all of its members. Best working of any institution depends upon the amalgamation of both the teachers and students. All the important revolutions and unusual movement came in practical just due to the struggle and power of students. In case of Pakistan we can have the example of the great anti-Aye movement lead by students and ended with success just due to the command and muscle of students. In anti-Ayub movement, student brought an end to Ayub regime.
Talking about the National University of Modern Languages, recently a student protest has been held in favor of their teacher. It resulted in an aftermath of making of NASA (teachers and faculty union). Mr. Syed Farrukh Zad was elected as a president of this newly born union. He is a professor of International Relation Department.
Your comments are welcomed regarding this revolutionary change; students union election are near  by,  feel free to comment  your suggestions can bring  a positive change

repercussion of Numl incident

March 3, 2010

The brutal act was condemned by the faculty members of NUML University against the registrar and forces him to resign. This all was the tipping point of the consciousness of freedom of expression. The dilemma of Pakistani’s universities is that there is no environment for free expression. The faculty is subordinate and not allows expressing their views and opinions on politics in particular and even on their basic rights in general. This is actually the failure of Pakistan’s academic system. Although we cry for the democratic values but the implementation of these values is nowhere. The incident of NUML becomes a tipping point for a change. The faculty of NUML realized their basic rights. It is a revolution to bring a change at least in NUML to form an academic staff association in which teachers collectively discuss their problem and resentment.
The establishment of such associations is not a bad thing as the administration considers it infect in this way a transparent system would be established with the participation of all. The dilemma in the country is the administration not allows their faculty to voice against them. To switch off the truth and freedom of expression is not justified by so-called democratic. We are not living in dark ages. It is very necessary to realize that universities are actually the place of intellectuals where every one has right of discussion and arguments on every issues of state with tolerant attitudes. But such kind of forum and environment is missing in Pakistani’s universities. The incident of NUML brings realization in all the faculty members of other universities as well. Many people wrote on this issue and condemned this shameful act, this response actually the victory of NUML’s faculty.
