China UK clash on Copenhagen Failure
December 22, 2009
Events and new prospective can affect existing rights or call for new ones. Status quo of human rights is changed with human progress. At the beginning only life, liberty, freedom of movement and equality before the law was consider human rights but now healthy and adequate environment is the basic human right. Rapid industrialization generates environmental issues and to counter environmental issues environmental politics, Green parties. Green peace, Friends of earth have emerged. These political, social and scientific movements compel developed and developing states to take combined action against environment issues. UNFCC C (united nation convention on climate change) signed In Rio de Janeiro conference of 1992 that provides platform for futures steps. The Kyoto Protocol was initially adopted on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (30 November 2009 – 11 December 2009) held to determine the strategy going forward after Kyoto. The goal is to enter into a binding global climate agreement that will apply to the period after 2012. Copenhagen summit ended without the 192 nations reaching a binding agreement. The states simply committed to “taking note” of a deal recognizing the need to limit temperature rises to 2C.Failure of Copenhagen is a major stroke for the environmental movements and setback for environmental initiatives.
British Labour politician and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband said that vast majority of states wanted legally binding treaty to protect the world but only 4 or 5 states want to cancel the accord. He added that china had vetoed two proposed agreements on global emission cuts despite that all developed and many developing states are agree on that. China respond vigorously that ED Miliband and others behind this editorial should complete their commitments with developing countries and avoid from activities that hinder the international community’s co-operation in coping with climate change. China accused that developed countries didn’t offer global emission cut in the green house gas and don’t offer economic help to other developing states that trying to cope with environmental issues.
It is not time to blame each other but to take joint action against this global issue. All stake holders should fulfill their obligations so that we can preserve and left healthy environment for our future generation. In the lust of power and domination we are destroying our home but it is the time of change and realization of our obligations. We appeal to our readers to take action and participate to compel all states to play positive role to preserve the environment.
Got something to say?
